Your window display doesn’t stop working at closing time — unless your shutter makes it. A perforated roller shutter is a steel or aluminium curtain punched with thousands of small round holes: solid enough to stop a break-in, open enough that a lit display stays readable from the pavement all night.

For fashion retailers, phone shops, opticians and showrooms, it’s the difference between eight hours of free advertising and a blank metal wall. Supplied and fitted from £1,500. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements.

How a perforated curtain works

Each lath is perforated with a dense pattern of small holes — typically a few millimetres across — adding up to roughly 20–30% open area. That’s enough for light to pass and window-shoppers to browse, but each hole is far too small for hands or tools.

You keep the visual connection with the street; would-be intruders keep their distance. It’s also why police crime-prevention advice often favours see-through shutters: a visible, lit interior is easier for passers-by and patrols to monitor than a hidden one.

Who chooses perforated — and why

Fashion and footwear stores on evening high streets. Mobile phone and electronics shops that rotate window offers. Opticians and jewellery-adjacent retail where the display is the marketing. Estate agents whose window cards get read at 9pm. If people walk past your shop after dark, a perforated shutter keeps them shopping with their eyes — several of our retail clients tell us Monday footfall starts on Sunday night’s window.

Perforated vs punched-hole vs grille

These three get confused constantly, so here’s the plain-English difference. Perforated = many small holes across the whole lath — the most display-friendly of the closed-curtain types. Punched-hole = larger vision slots pressed into an otherwise solid lath — stronger, less see-through, from £2,200. Rolling grille = open lattice, maximum airflow and visibility, best indoors — from £2,200. And if visibility doesn’t matter at your location, a solid shutter at the same £1,500 starting price buys the most strength. Full comparison on our roller shutters guide.

Specification and finish

Curtains in galvanised steel or aluminium, powder-coated to any RAL colour; guides, canopy and locking matched. Manual push-up with bullet locks on smaller openings, or electric operation with key switch, remote or smartphone control — recommended for daily-use retail so opening the shop takes seconds, not shoulder work.

CE/UKCA-marked to BS EN 13241, fitted in a day by our own team, made to measure in 7–10 working days.

Keeping it running

Perforated curtains carry hundreds of small edges, so an annual clean-and-service keeps the lath surface and guides smooth and the motor within safe load — see roller shutter servicing. Damaged laths from a delivery knock or attempted break-in? Individual laths can usually be replaced without a new curtain — emergency shutter repair, 24/7.

Perforated shutter FAQs

Yes — with your window lit, displays, pricing and branding stay clearly readable from the pavement. Around a fifth to a third of the curtain is open area.

For most retail, yes: the holes are far too small to reach or cut through, and the curtain locks into heavy-duty guides. For very high-risk stock, compare punched-hole or solid options — we’ll advise honestly at survey.

Perforated laths have many small holes across the whole curtain (best visibility). Punched-hole laths are mostly solid with larger pressed vision slots (more strength, less view). We fit both.

It reduces both slightly but blocks neither — which is why they’re also used on kiosks and indoor units that need overnight ventilation.

Yes — powder-coated to any RAL reference before installation.

Electric for daily retail use; manual is fine for smaller or occasional-use openings. Electric models include a manual override for power cuts.

Made to measure in 7–10 working days after the free survey, installed in a day — about two weeks end to end.
