When the priority is stopping someone getting in — not showing what’s inside — a solid roller shutter is the answer. The curtain is a continuous wall of interlocking steel or aluminium laths with no holes, no gaps and no weak points, which is why jewellers, off-licences, pharmacies storing controlled stock and shops on quiet parades choose it over every other type.

We supply and fit solid shutters from £1,500. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements.

Why a solid curtain is the strongest shutter

Every opening in a shutter curtain is a place to attack it. A solid lath has none. The curtain presents a flat, continuous metal face that resists cutting, levering and impact far better than any vision shutter — and because passers-by can’t see your stock, it also removes the temptation that starts most smash-and-grab attempts.

Fitted with heavy-duty guides and bullet locks (or motor locking on electric models), a solid shutter turns your frontage into the least attractive target on the street.

Steel or aluminium?

We make solid curtains in both. Galvanised steel is the default for security — heavier, tougher, and the right choice for high-risk premises. Aluminium curtains are roughly a third lighter, kinder to motors on wide openings, and naturally corrosion-resistant — often the better engineering choice above ~5 metres or on exposed frontages. Both are powder-coated to any RAL colour so the shutter matches your shop front rather than fighting it.

Where we fit them

Off-licences and convenience stores on residential parades; pharmacies with controlled-drug storage requirements; jewellers and pawnbrokers where insurers demand solid protection; storage units, workshops and rear service doors — and any shop that’s been broken into once and doesn’t intend to repeat the experience. For clients including Tesco, Lidl and Costa we’ve fitted shutters where the brief was simple: “make it not happen again.”

What about insurance?

Many insurers reduce premiums — or only offer cover at all — when a solid security shutter protects the frontage. Some specify security ratings such as LPS 1175 for high-risk stock. Tell us what your policy requires and we’ll spec the curtain, guides and locking to match, in writing, so you can send it straight to your insurer.

The trade-off — and the alternatives

A solid shutter hides your window display completely. If your street has healthy evening footfall, that’s revenue you’re giving up: a perforated shutter (same £1,500 starting price) keeps a lit display readable, and a punched-hole shutter gives partial vision with near-solid strength.

If you mainly need to stop hands rather than hide stock — arcades, shopping-centre units — look at rolling grilles. Our roller shutters guide compares all four honestly.

Operation, installation, aftercare

Manual push-up with bullet locks suits smaller solid shutters; anything wide, heavy or used daily should be electric — solid curtains are the heaviest we make, and a tubular motor spares your back and your lath alignment. Installation is typically one day after a 7–10 day manufacture window. An annual service keeps the extra weight running true; if a solid shutter ever jams shut with your shop inside it, our 24/7 emergency repair team opens it.

Solid shutter FAQs

From £1,500 supplied and fitted for a typical single shop front. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements. Free survey, fixed quote.

Yes. With no openings in the curtain, a solid lath resists cutting and levering better than any vision shutter. Perforated comes close while keeping your display visible — the right choice depends on your street and stock.

Usually — solid shutters are what most policies mean by “security shutters”, and we can spec to named standards such as LPS 1175 where your policy requires it. Send us the policy wording and we’ll match it.

Steel for maximum security on standard widths; aluminium where weight matters — wide spans, motor economy, or exposed locations. We’ll recommend at survey based on your opening.

Yes — powder-coated to any RAL colour before fitting. See our RAL colour chart.

Usually not, but external solid shutters are the type most often restricted in conservation areas. We check your address at survey and recommend a compliant alternative if needed.

Electric for anything used daily or wider than a standard single frontage — solid curtains are heavy. Every electric shutter includes manual override for power cuts.

Around two weeks: 7–10 working days manufacture after survey, then typically one day on site.
