If you open your shop every morning, the shutter is the first job of the day — and hauling steel by hand 700 times a year is nobody’s business plan. An electric roller shutter turns opening up into a ten-second, one-hand task: turn a key, press a remote, or tap your phone, and the curtain rolls itself.

We supply and fit electric operation on every curtain type we make — solid, perforated, punched-hole and rolling grilles — from £1,500 supplied and fitted depending on curtain type. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements.

How do electric roller shutters work?

A tubular motor sits inside the barrel the curtain wraps around — invisible from outside, quiet in use. Power it, and the motor turns the barrel to raise or lower the curtain along its guides, stopping automatically at set limits.

Every powered shutter we fit includes a safety brake (the curtain cannot free-fall if the motor fails) and a manual override — a discreet winding point that lets you open up during a power cut. Controls are your choice: a keyed switch on the wall, a keyfob remote from inside your car, or app control with open/closed status when you’re off-site.

The practical threshold: anything much beyond a small kiosk curtain, or any shutter operated by one member of staff at 7am, should be electric. Manual still earns its place on light grilles and rarely-used rear doors. We quote both options at survey when it’s genuinely a coin-toss — the motor spec and exact cost are confirmed at your free survey.

Converting an existing manual shutter

Many manual shutters can be motorised without replacing the curtain: we swap the spring assembly for a tubular motor, add limits, safety brake, override and your chosen controls, and re-balance the curtain. Whether yours is a candidate depends on the barrel, guides and curtain condition — a ten-minute check during a service visit answers it. If the curtain itself is tired, replacing the whole unit is often better value; we’ll show you both numbers and let you decide.

Controls and smart options

Keyed switch — simple, vandal-resistant, our default. Remote fobs — open from the car; popular on parades where staff arrive before dawn. Grouped control — one press for multiple shutters; mall units and multi-door premises. App control — with status notifications, so “did anyone close the shutter?” has an answer from your sofa. Timers are available but we spec them carefully: a shutter that opens itself to an empty shop is a security feature pointed the wrong way.

Safety and compliance

Powered shutters at a workplace fall under PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) — they must be maintained in safe working order, which in practice means an annual professional service: brake, limits, force settings, override and electrics tested and documented. Our installations are CE/UKCA-marked to BS EN 13241, and we demonstrate the override to your staff at handover. If a motor ever fails shut at 8am, our 24/7 emergency team covers London and the M25.

Electric roller shutter FAQs

From £1,500 supplied and fitted depending on the curtain type — solid and perforated start at £1,500, punched-hole and grilles at £2,200 — with the motor specification confirmed at your free survey. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements.

A tubular motor inside the barrel raises and lowers the curtain at the press of a switch, remote or app, stopping automatically at preset limits, with a safety brake preventing free-fall.

Every electric shutter we fit includes a manual override — a winding point that opens the shutter without power. You will never be locked out by a power cut.

Often, yes — if the barrel, guides and curtain are sound, we replace the spring with a tubular motor and add controls. We’ll confirm feasibility and price at a survey or service visit.

Use the override: insert the winding handle at the marked point (usually in the canopy or endplate) and wind. We demonstrate this at handover and label the point clearly.

Yes — fitted with safety brakes and set force limits, CE/UKCA-marked to BS EN 13241, and serviced annually as PUWER requires for powered workplace equipment.

Keyed switch for simplicity, remote fob for convenience, app control if you manage the premises remotely or want closed-status confirmation. They can be combined.

Yes — annually. It’s a legal expectation for powered workplace equipment (PUWER) and the cheapest way to avoid a motor failure that shuts your shop.

Typically one day on site, with the shutter made to measure in 7–10 working days after your free survey.
